“Failure and invention go hand in hand and ultimately you need a lot of failures, humanity is evolving by its mistakes and by its survival on those mistakes and that's what creates the resilience. You learn from the mistakes, … ultimately you're getting information from that, it's a feedback loop, you're getting information and more perspective, you're learning by virtue of the trial and error and in a complex world what's important.” Roger Spitz told me on Episode 48 part 2 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Based in San Francisco, Roger is President of Techistential (Climate & Foresight Strategy) and Chairman of the Disruptive Futures Institute. He has given over 100 keynote talks globally, and guest lectured at many of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions. He is also the author along with Lidia Zuin of four guidebooks that are being published on The Definitive Guide to Thriving on Disruption.
As former Global Head of Technology M&A with BNP Paribas, Roger advised on over 50 transactions with deal value of $25bn, and raising $2bn in capital. He launched the bank’s US M&A practice in San Francisco, having built its European Technology & Digital investment banking franchises in London and Paris.
After a Masters in Corporate & International Finance from the University of Durham in the UK, Roger qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He has lived in 10 different cities across three continents, and is bilingual English & French.
Roger and I had a great discussion and talked about the following:
Collaborating with Lidia Zuin to write The Definitive Guide to Thriving on Disruption,
How diverse perspectives can add real value and help companies survive by questioning assumptions and the status quo,
How science fiction can help innovation,
What is design fiction and how applying it, can enhance your life and career?,
Developing a mindset to become comfortable with the uncertainty of modern life,
Reframing failure as a part of the process of invention and creation,

The difference between complex and complicated, and

"If you're relevant and that relevance is something that's tested every day you can be relevant today and not tomorrow but vice versa … you can be irrelevant today and suddenly become relevant … so to have the right skills, to stay in the game to continue what you're doing or to develop something new you really just need to develop relevance but that's relevance for your stakeholders, for your boss whether it comes through skills, expertise, something unique you have, that you're just very likable, that you're so indispensable that people cannot do without you” Roger Spitz told me on Episode 48 part 1 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

"Conversation analysis is the study of real talk, the data is recordings … of real interactions so not simulations, not role plays … we look at real talk in the wild, as it happens ... the aim is to understand the complete encounter from the moment it starts all the way through to the end. Over 50 years of research, conversation analysts have shown that we are pulled around by language by that I don't just mean words, I mean everything that we use as a resource to interact with others so of course our gestures, our gaze, our intonation … So we look at all of those things and ... by what happens in the opening of the encounter and how does that sort of manifest in a trajectory all the way through to the end" Professor Elizabeth Stokoe told me on Episode 47 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Liz and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Studying psychology at university,
How a lucky break and a supportive supervisor helped her gain a fully funded PhD and set her on the path to specialising in conversation analysis,
How following her instincts and taking action helped her career journey,
What is conversation analysis and why it is important?,
Conversations generally have a structure and follow a path similar to a racetrack,
Busting myths about communication such as the importance of body language and non-verbal communication,
Why asking someone “how are you” at the start of a conversation is not just pointless filler talk,
The significance and meaning of silence in conversation,
Improving communication at work by thinking about the other person and the purpose of the interaction,
Ways to improve interview performance from both the interviewer’s and interviewee’s perspective and
Why it’s not always important to build rapport to have good communication.
Liz joined the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science in January 2023. Previously, she was Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University, where she was Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for REF2021 (Research Excellence Framework) (2019-2021) and Associate Dean Research (2013-2018). She is also visiting Professor II at University of Southeastern Norway (2016-). She conducts conversation analytic research to understand how talk works - from first dates to medical communication and from sales encounters to hostage negotiation.
She has worked as an industry fellow at SaaS companies Typeform and at Deployed. In addition to academic publishing, she is passionate about science communication, and has given talks at TED, New Scientist, Google, Microsoft, and The Royal Institution, and performed at Latitude and Cheltenham Science Festivals. Her book, Talk: The Science of Conversation, was published by Little, Brown (in 2018) and she has a co-authored book on Crisis Talk coming out later in 2022. Her research and biography were featured on BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific.
During the Covid-19 pandemic she has participated in a behavioural science sub-group of the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and is a member of Independent SAGE behaviour group. She is a Wired Innovation Fellow and in 2021 was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the British Psychological Society.

“Think about yourself as a business, what's your USP, what's your unique selling proposition and you may not know it now and that's okay because it's something that evolves and you can certainly ask people around you in work or your friends … but if you understand yourself as a little business, it's part of a helpful journey to understand what's unique about yourself and how to put yourself forward because I think we do have to be much more self-aware” Sophie Wade told me on Episode 46 of Reframe & Reset Your Career.

"You don't know what your perfect job is, I don't know what my perfect job is, so go exploring. It's like buying houses you have to look at a lot of houses and then one day you go in one and you go "I love this house and the price is right". It's the same with jobs, really explore as much as possible because then one day you'll have the interview or have a contact with someone and you'll just suddenly be "oh okay this feels like a really good fit for me" " my good friend, Emile West, told me on this bonus episode of Reframe & Reset Your Career.

We discuss creating a conscious and fulfilling career and potential strategies for developing in your current role or looking for new opportunities. She was also recently awarded Career Coach of the Year 2022 from SME News Greater London Enterprise Awards. She offers coaching, business consulting and professional speaking services across a range of areas including leadership, brand and image, wellbeing and emotional intelligence. She has 14 years Investment Banking experience most recently heading up the Leadership Development programme for RBS Corporate & Institutional Banking, transforming leadership and wellbeing for 1000+ staff. She was also Head of Personal Development for the RBS Women's network. As a nutritional therapist she specialises in stress management and works with companies to setup educational and engaging wellbeing programmes that will make a tangible difference to individuals health and resilience through practical and easy to make changes. As well as providing mentorship for young professionals, she also supports the charities Action for Children and the HER Centre.
Emilie and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Why it’s important to examine your career path and be strategic,
Does it take a particular mindset to achieve a fulfilling career?
Why adaptability and the ability to become comfortable with change are increasingly more important,
How important is passion when people are looking at which career path to take,
How careers are increasingly non linear and there are many different paths to success,

Episode 45. Neuroscience Insights Into Interoception, Decision Making And Career Success
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
“Internal signals can also influence decision making and I think there is space for both approaches. Sometimes our feelings can not necessarily align with what the right thing is to do and there are definitely situations where we need to make the hard decisions … there's space for that rational thing where you know why you're feeling what you're feeling and choose to override it however I think there's also the reverse scenario where actually paying attention to these bodily signals can also be extra informative” Professor Sarah Garfinkel told me on Episode 45 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Sarah is Professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, where she leads the Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Group.
She completed her PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex, before undergoing a fellowship in Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan.

In 2018, Sarah was selected as one of 11 researchers on the international Nature Rising Stars Index across all STEM disciplines, and in 2021 she was awarded the 'mid-career' award for the British Association for Cognitive Neuroscience.
Sarah and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Why she chose to study psychology at university rather than art,
How she had a lucky break when she was offered a place to study for a PhD,
How dyslexia helps her to think differently and come up with creative and novel solutions,
Interoception and whether it is possible to develop it,
How emotion and gut feelings impact decision making,
Her work on a trading floor study which looking at the connection between trader’s profitability and their interoceptive ability,

Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
"Goal setting is massively important … that objective setting and the key results of the milestones along the way that you need to achieve. It's helpful, it's not just for business owners or people in jobs it can help you in any aspect of your life ... if you're just blindly turning up to your job every day … that's like jumping into your car and driving randomly for an hour in a certain direction and scratching your head going why wasn't that fulfilling and why don't I like the destination?" Robin Waite told me on Episode 43 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Robin is a business coach, keynote speaker, the Founder of The Fearless Business Accelerator and the best selling author of Online Business Startup and Take Your Shot.
He was entrepreneurial from a young age and used his earnings from a paper round to invest in second hand CDs, which he sold to his school friends. Whilst attending university, Robin spent four years as a systems analyst for a medical devices company, helping them increase their turnover by 50 per cent, from £1 million to £1.5 million.
After graduation, he ran a successful design and advertising agency serving over 250 clients for over 12 years. During this time, he helped over 1,000 business owners improve their marketing, product architecture, pricing, websites and digital advertising.
Then he had a life changing moment whilst riding his bike and decided to close his agency, which led to the start of the work he is doing today.
Robin and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Building a strong network by first offering to help rather than asking,
Balancing working as a systems analyst, DJing and studying at university all at the same time,
Starting his own branding and design business after university,
Strategies for standing out at work,
How content creation can help build your brand,
