Just imagine, you’re called in for a big client presentation at work and you have to win the pitch to save your career. This is a scenario that professional athletes, including our guest Robbie White, face throughout their career. Robbie shared how he has dealt with this and much more on Episode 54 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Robbie is a professional cricketer with one of England’s top cricket clubs, Middlesex CCC. Prior to becoming a full time professional cricketer with Middlesex, Robbie attended Loughborough University, where he graduated with a Psychology degree as he has always been interested in the mental side of sport. Robbie is a batsman and wicket keeper and he scored his first hundred for Middlesex in 2021, which was soon followed by a second.
During the winters Robbie has used his time off to start working for David James Wealth as a Client Relationship Manager to gain experience in the business world to help him navigate his life after cricket.
Robbie is a good friend of the show and previously appeared on Episode 8. I was keen to get him back to do a deep dive into the mental side of sport, how athletes manage extreme pressure and how it can be applied to our working life. We had a great conversation and discussed the following:
How studying psychology has helped his sporting career,
Building resilience by managing and moving on from failure,
Focusing on what you can control when faced with stressful scenarios,
The benefits of visualisation and recalling what helped you succeed if you’re in a difficult situation,
Becoming comfortable with uncertainty by creating a routine,
How good leaders understand each team member’s unique needs and personality and
The leadership insights that he has picked up by captaining the Middlesex second team.

Just imagine being diagnosed with cancer at 40 and you’re told it’s incurable. This is the dire situation that Dr Gil Winch faced over 20 years ago. Once he recovered from the shock, he set out to overcome his illness by strengthening his body, strengthening his mind and finding a new life mission. This eventually led to him founding Call Yachol, an outsourcing call center, which is a 100% underdog company composed mainly of people with disabilities and is a proving ground for his hiring and workforce-building model.
Gil has served for 30+ years as an organizational consultant for many large companies and is an in-demand keynote speaker. His work creating Call Yachol has received international attention and led to an invitation to speak at conferences alongside Bill Clinton and other influential leaders.
Gil is the author of Winning with Underdogs, which is an inspiring read and a practical step-by-step guide, using the lessons from his business, to help build a more just society, while benefitting your business―and everyone in it!
Gil and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Moving from clinical to organisational psychology as it was more aligned with his personality,
How he started his mission to assist people with disabilities back into work,
Why helping people and giving is so transformative,
The strategies that he used to take back control and overcome his illness,
The power of reframing and how it helps to overcome fear,
How his company reduces the stress and anxiety of the interview process,
Ways of developing confidence,
Managing difficult situations at work,
Job search strategies, and
Creating a caring environment and managing your team with kindness.

His first book, The Intelligence Trap, was published in 2019, and received worldwide media attention.

His writing has also appeared in the Guardian, the Atlantic, Aeon, Men’s Health and many more outlets.

What is the nocebo effect and how it differs from the placebo effect?
Don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking,
Looking at the brain as a prediction machine,
Reframing stressful situations and focusing on the positive aspects,
Changing mindset is important but results can’t be achieved without preparation and effort,
Reminding yourself of the work that you’ve done may help prior to an event like an interview or presentation,
Finding opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone without taking on excessive risk, which helped David with his public speaking,
Celebrating your achievements can help reinforce your mindset, and
Is it possible to increase your willpower?

“We recruiters can sense when somebody's panicked and it's just unfortunately not going to be to your advantage … so I would say fundamental to moving forward as a job seeker or if you're trying to grow or change your career is thinking through, how can I get my head straight, how can I be at my best? … I will say that there's not a simple answer and I don't like it when people project that it is "just go do this, everything will be great" … it is challenging for a lot of people but coming from the recruiter's perspective, I would say it will absolutely benefit you if you get your mindset in a decent place as you go forward” Jenny Foss told me on Episode 49 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

“Failure and invention go hand in hand and ultimately you need a lot of failures, humanity is evolving by its mistakes and by its survival on those mistakes and that's what creates the resilience. You learn from the mistakes, … ultimately you're getting information from that, it's a feedback loop, you're getting information and more perspective, you're learning by virtue of the trial and error and in a complex world what's important.” Roger Spitz told me on Episode 48 part 2 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Based in San Francisco, Roger is President of Techistential (Climate & Foresight Strategy) and Chairman of the Disruptive Futures Institute. He launched the bank’s US M&A practice in San Francisco, having built its European Technology & Digital investment banking franchises in London and Paris.
After a Masters in Corporate & International Finance from the University of Durham in the UK, Roger qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He has lived in 10 different cities across three continents, and is bilingual English & French.
Roger and I had a great discussion and talked about the following:
Collaborating with Lidia Zuin to write The Definitive Guide to Thriving on Disruption,
How diverse perspectives can add real value and help companies survive by questioning assumptions and the status quo,
How science fiction can help innovation,
