"You can actually also reach flow in the workplace and it happens when we have just the right mix of chemicals in our brains and those are dopamine, noradrenaline, acetylcholine. I think that's a mouthful to remember so I called it fun, fear and focus when you have fun at work, your brain releases dopamine, when you have just the right level of fear not too much not too little, your brain releases noradrenaline that gives you like an energy kick and when you're fully focused your brain releases acetylcholine. So when those three come together fun fear and focus you can reach flow", Friederike Fabritius, told me on Episode 41 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Friederike, is a neuroscientist and trailblazer in the field of neuroleadership. Her brain-based leadership programs have transformed how Fortune 500 executives think, innovate, and navigate change. Ever since she can remember, Friederike has been curious about the way the brain works and why people behave the way they do. That’s why she chose to become a neuroscientist.
An alumna of McKinsey & Company and the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, she serves on the prestigious German Academy of Science and Engineering. She is the author of the award-winning book, The Leading Brain: Neuroscience Hacks to Work Smarter, Better, Happier and her new book is The Brain-Friendly Workplace: Why Talented People Quit and How to Get Them to Stay, which will be published on 11th October.
Friederike is fluent in six languages and lives with her husband and five children in Heidelberg, Germany.
Friederike and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
The dangers of group think.
How Friederike became interested in neuroscience,
The unusual way she became a management consultant,
Her new book and the importance of diversity of thought,
How to get into the flow state through “Fun, Fear and Focus”,

Episode 40. Leading Inclusion: Drive Change Your Employees Can See And Feel
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
"You have to remember that leadership has two components to it or at least two ... you're helping people to get a job done that's what a leader does, it's not like you're pushing them to get the job done or telling them to get the job done the leader's job is to help people get a job done so there's the task part and then there's the part of the job that is the human part which is to interact with the humans who are getting the job done in such a way that it encourages them to do the work and does not take away any of their natural shine or capability" Dr Gena Cox told me on Episode 40 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Dr Gena Cox is an organizational psychologist, executive coach, and author of the new book Leading Inclusion, a groundbreaking guidebook for corporate leaders who want to build inclusive organizations from the top down.
Gena has spent more than 25 years helping leaders in the Fortune 500 and other large global companies build healthy and engaging organizational cultures.
Gena is a straight shooter who brings warmth and generosity of spirit to her partnerships. A noted voice on human-centered leadership, Gena shows executives how to stop using 2019 behavior to address 2022 workplace challenges. Gena was born in England, raised in Barbados, lives in the United States and would like to holiday in Scandinavia!
Gena and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Being taught by Arthur Ashe, the legendary US tennis player, at college,
How her father gave her book on psychology when she was young which inspired her interest in this area,
The huge influence of her grandparents on her life despite not having formal academic credentials,
The events which inspired her to write Leading Inclusion and to eventually leave corporate life,
The distinction between diversity and inclusion and the important role that leaders play,
The components which make an effective leader,
Having a back up plan if things are not working out in your current situation,
Updating your CV regularly as it is easy to forget/ overlook your achievements,
Starting a side project like a podcast or YouTube channel can enhance your career,
How to prepare for and manage difficult conversations at work, and
Creating a culture of safety, where your team are happy to provide feedback.

Episode 39. Taking Small Steps To Build A Thriving Creative Business
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
"It's also about not only allowing yourself to make mistakes but allowing other people to make mistakes, how do you acknowledge, address them? … Leadership to me is not just about talking, setting new rules, having these heartfelt conversations, … you actually have to build something that actually helps the team and you have to listen to them. If the team says that no we don't need a complicated process, … let's co-create something that people actually use and find it helpful … when that system breaks down a bit, start another conversation again. … so you have to be very iterative, respectful, be a good listener and act accordingly," Fei Wu told me on Episode 39 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Fei helps small business owners craft video content to showcase their products and services, and to grow their customer base with YouTube strategies designed to meet their business needs.
She is a bilingual podcaster (English and Mandarin Chinese), the creator of Feisworld Media (a monetized YouTube channel with 17K subscribers and 50K+ views per month), Feisworld Podcast / 菲的世界播客 (with over 200K downloads worldwide) and Feisworld Documentary Series on Amazon Prime.
She left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld LLC, with a mission to help small businesses and creative entrepreneurs tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams.
She also teaches others how to run better Zoom Meetings and Webinars, own and monetize their content on YouTube via Feisworld Academy.
Her stories have been featured by Dorie Clark in her best-selling book called “Entrepreneurial You”, as well as Harvard Business Review.
Fei was born in Beijing, China and moved to Maine, USA for high school as a teenager and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. Fei has a 3rd-Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and worked as a DJ for the China National Radio Station (CNR) at the age of 16.
I had a great conversation with Fei and we talked about the following:
The importance of the mental game to high performance,
Moving to the US as a teenager, adapting to life in an unfamiliar country and playing on the ice hockey team with and against boys,
How embracing constraints rather than fighting them sparks creativity,
Good feedback helps shape career development and the focus of content creation,
Following her strengths to become a project manager early in her career,
Taking small steps to build her podcast which gave her the confidence to leave corporate life,
Why it's important to enjoy the content creation process rather than solely focusing on the results,
Interviewing Steve Wozniak and Mark Cuban,
Having a vision and goal for your life and career but being open to this changing over time as you grow,
The leadership lessons that she picked up from building her team, especially listening, and
Don’t overthink content creation, just start a blog or record a video, it does not have to be perfect!

“So there's a lot of pressure in change, in trying to engineer how we feel or how we think, thoughts just come into our heads randomly, who knows why we think certain things. We can respond to the thoughts but that's effortful, takes energy. So there's an alternative conceptualization which is that confidence doesn't have to be about how you feel or feeling good or having positive thoughts, confidence is more about an action and the action is driven by your values” Paul Berry told me on Episode 38 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
With a background in the field of performance psychology, Paul works with C-suite leaders, and those transitioning into leadership roles, to enhance various aspects related to organisational and individual performance.
Paul specialises in Developmental Coaching, which seeks to better understand how leaders construct their worldviews, and how this influences their approach to leadership, working relationships and decision-making. His coaching aims to enhance client critical thinking and achieve shifts in perspective.
As an experienced group facilitator, Paul works with several business psychology consultancies in the UK, delivering on large leadership development programmes. He also has an interest in developing coach expertise and has published academic work in this area.
Paul was previously a professional for nearly 15 years in the investment banking industry. He worked as an equity and credit derivatives trader for a global banking group, managing large risk positions.
Paul has numerous coaching and finance qualifications, including a masters in coaching and mentoring practice from Oxford Brookes University, a masters in Performance Psychology from the University of Edinburgh and a masters in Investment Analysis and a BA in Economics both from the University of Stirling.
I had a great conversation with Paul and talked about the following:
His interest in the psychology of performance,
Why Paul started working in Finance,
Managing stress in the financial markets and at work,
The importance of developing your network,
Reflection v Reflexivity,
Confidence and potential strategies for developing it,
Overcoming self doubt,
Managing nerves and being confident in a job interview scenario,
Intuition in decision making, and
“Kind v Wicked” environments in the context of intuition.

What is a career mashup and how can it help build the business of you? Connie Steele and I discussed this, her best-selling book “Building the Business of You and so much more on Episode 37 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Appreciating your achievements and talents, especially things you find easy,
Studying mathematics but moving into marketing research after researching options in college,
Being strategic and intentional to transition into Tech with AOL to learn new skills and accelerate her own growth,
Enjoying the agile Tech environment of experimenting, learning and not worrying about failure,
Becoming the "CEO of You", viewing yourself as a product/ service and showcasing how you add value and what you stand for,
Adopting a flexible mindset to deal with the increasing uncertainty of the world,
Her new book “Building the Business of You” which looks at providing a system/ roadmap to develop your career,
Being strategic when planning and developing your career not simply working hard,
Being honest about your abilities and seeing how they dovetail with macro and micro trends to identify potential career opportunities,
Work is not always meritocratic, you need to understand the bigger picture, develop soft skills and build strong relationships,
Creating a career development plan and sharing it with trusted people in your network so that they may help guide you to your goals,
Don’t take feedback as criticism but reframe it as a data point and way to improve and
The importance of emotional intelligence, it’s a skill that you can develop.
Connie is a future of work and life expert, author, co-founder of management consultancy Flywheel Associates and host of the Strategic Momentum Podcast.
With over twenty years of experience, working at Fortune 500 (companies such as AOL and General Mills), start-up and scale-up organizations, high-growth tech companies, and consulting with C-level executives, Connie has observed firsthand how business is no longer straightforward, but collaborative and fluid. Connie has always been intrigued by the “why” behind companies and careers that thrive and has spent ten years studying the workplace trends that are now permanent changes. Her goal is to help people understand their skills, talents and interests to help them build their long term strategic approach in order for them to discover their portfolio career or superjob. She’s also passionate about helping leaders build fluid organizations to adapt and thrive in a world where uncertainty is the new certainty.
In her best-selling book “Building the Business of You,” Connie shares the trends of tomorrow so professionals can form their own career mashup – her term for the career of the future in which workers merge their skills, passions and values. Connie’s book shares future of work trends that provide the ‘why’ behind how people’s attitudes, motivations and expectations are changing with respect to work and life. Yet, it also touches on the implications to our personal and leadership development as a result. It teaches a strategic planning framework to help those take control of their career, because in today’s world you have to now be the CEO of you.
Connie’s perspectives and advice has appeared on Forbes, Authority Magazine, TechRound and Thrive Global.
Connie and I talked about how progress at work is not always directly linked to working hard and performing well and she told me: “For so many, you go into work thinking it is this meritocracy, you go in thinking it is black and white just like school ... the reality is that's not always the case at all, sometimes it is but in many instances there are so many other factors that influence an outcome and if you're not aware of that, you're not seeing the big picture, it's hard to understand. Many people get quite frustrated because they don't understand why peers might be moving up when they may not have that level of talent or commitment to delivery and so you see that there's this hidden game”.

Looking for insights into mental wellbeing from a former investor who retrained to become a psychotherapist? Kelly Hearn discussed this, her career journey and much more on Episode 36 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Her love of Rainer Maria Rilke’s poetry and learning to sit with uncertainty,
Overcoming the initial rejection from the finance industry to volunteer which helped when applying to business schools,
There is more than one path to success, make a decision and be open and flexible,
Working out what is important for each of us and not being purely led by external considerations,
Working in investment management and managing stress by adopting a healthy lifestyle,
The importance of self care to manage burn out and feeling overwhelmed,
Following her interest in psychology and counselling & psychotherapy to transition out of finance,
Having open and honest conversations in the work place and managing conflict which may arise,
Reframing conflict, approaching it constructively and learning about each other’s perspective,
Managing emotions that arise and understand your part in conflict,
Looking at potential ways to change your role at your current employer before looking outside,
Don’t just use the traditional methods when job hunting, approach it like an investigative journalist, and
Taking action helps you gain more information to shape your job search.
Kelly spent the first two decades of her professional life in the left-brain world of finance. After completing an MBA at Columbia Business School in New York, she moved to London to help establish one US investment fund, and then another, in Europe.
At some point along the way, Kelly turned her analytical focus away from spreadsheets and annual reports to the existential questions of everyday life.
Kelly spent two years pursuing writing as a means for exploration while completing an MA in Creative Non-Fiction Writing at City University, London. She then trained at the Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) in London.
A registered member of the BACP and UKCP, Kelly has wide experience working with individual, couple and corporate clients within the NHS, private practice and at The School of Life. She is also an avid ‘sanity walker’ and yogi.
She is currently the co founder of Examined Life, which is a collective of therapists committed to innovation in the theory and practice of psychotherapy.
Kelly and I talked about questioning and understanding what is important, she said: “At some point, we need to stop following the rules and the externally set path and say what’s important to me and ask ourselves the really simple questions what do I love to do, what gives me energy, what do I get excited about, if I’m not moving in that direction, why not?”.

Episode 35. Think Differently: Insights From A Marketer To Help Level Up Your Career
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
"Stop comparing yourself to people, just stop, stop doing that period. Everybody had to start somewhere, everybody you're comparing yourself to was exactly where you were at some point and it doesn't happen overnight … Even though life is short, I think if you can just kind of say hey it's going to take time, I'm never going to be a finished product, I'm going to die being an unfinished product and just enjoy the process and the journey." Travis L. Scott shared with me on Episode 35 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Travis is a marketing and sales specialist and the Founder of Rainier Digital which helps companies solve interesting operational problems when it comes to marketing and sales. He also is the host of the Marketing UnBoxed and The Winding Road Podcasts.
After graduating high school, he attended Ball State University, eventually transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he graduated with a degree in Environmental Science.
Early in his career, he decided he wanted to learn more about business so he went back to school and obtained an MBA with a focus in marketing from the University of Colorado. Since then, he has worked in sales, recruiting, and eventually marketing spanning a startup in Seattle to Microsoft to a small B2B distributor in Denver.
He realized how similar marketing is to just about everything in life since it's so deeply rooted in psychology. That's when he realized he could help people by teaching basic marketing principles and demonstrating how they can apply to your career.
Travis is also the author of “Think Differently: How Recruitment Marketing Gets You Noticed Over The Noise”.
Travis and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
The importance of resilience and ignoring negative self talk,
How curiosity and the love of learning helped him start podcasting without prior experience,
Reassessing his priorities following the pandemic,
Strategies for overcoming ageism in the job search,
Choosing work which is fun and fulfilling rather than simply based on pay,
How playing sport developed his mental strength, resilience and discipline,
Initially working for the public sector but transitioning into sales and recruitment,
Working as a recruiter for a global tech company and insights for job seekers from a recruiter's perspective,
Creating content helps to share your knowledge and values,
Using marketing principles to build your personal brand,
Focusing on the process and your own journey rather than comparing yourself to others,
Writing his book on recruitment marketing in six months in an Akimbo workshop, and
Becoming comfortable with "good enough", perfection is not always required,
