Episode 32. Find Your Dream Job: Strategies For Finding Work & Advancing In Your Career
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
"Employers hire people to solve problems and you need to recognize that and you need to explore that when you do have a job interview with a hiring manager … if you want to distinguish yourself from your competitors … one of the best ways to do that is to ask the hiring manager what's keeping him or her up at night … and you have an opportunity to reflect back on your own experience and share examples of how you've solved a similar problem or you can talk about your ideas for solving that problem and when you do that the nature of the conversation changes, you're becoming almost peers because you're working together to solve a problem" Mac Prichard shared with me on Episode 32 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Mac is a communications strategist and career expert based in Portland, Oregon. He is the founder and publisher of Mac’s List, where he writes regularly about job hunting, leads classes on job search skills, and hosts the Find Your Dream Job podcast.
He also owns and operates Prichard Communications, a public relations agency that serves non-profits, public agencies, and foundations across the United States. Prior to running his own business, Mac had many years experience working in politics, government and non-profits.
He has a degree in political science from the University of Iowa and a masters in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
He is the author of two books: Land Your Dream Job Anywhere and Land Your Dream Job in Portland (and Beyond). When he’s not hard at work, Mac can be found watching classic movies, taking photos during his travels, or walking around Ladd’s Addition with his wife Kris and Weimaraner Kai.
Mac and I had an enjoyable conversation and talked about the following:
His interest in politics from an early age and studying politics at the University of Iowa.
Working on political campaigns and the skills he learnt,
Developing his interest in communication through role models in his family,
How volunteering helped Mac secure a position with a human rights organisation in Washington,
Changing his job search strategy and using informational interviews to find a new job which was not advertised,
Setting goals and being clear about what you want during your job search,
Starting Prichard Communications whilst still in employment, which helped him manage the risk of starting his own business,
Insights into the hiring process and looking at it from the hiring manager’s perspective,
Potential strategies to demonstrate problem solving skills at interview,
Taking charge of your career development and being proactive, and
Not being afraid to follow up politely after making a request as sometimes people are too busy and forget to respond.

Looking for ways to improve your communication at work and influence those people with more power? Dr Connson Locke, the author of Making Your Voice Heard, and I discussed this and much more on Episode 31 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Graduating from Harvard and starting her career in the non-profit sector,
Moving to Hong Kong and working in management consulting,
Developing an interest in training and teaching, which she developed at the Boston Consulting Group,
Earning a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley,
Her book Making Your Voice Heard and upward influence,
The four channels of communication: words, voice, touch and visual,
The importance of non-verbal communication, including facial expression, body language and tone of your voice, especially when communicating an opinion,
How to look and sound more confident through eye contact, voice and posture amongst other things,
French and Raven’s 5 bases of power, including developing Expert and Referent Power,
When starting a new job, taking time to understand the organisation and its power dynamics before trying to change things,
Stereotype threat,
Potential techniques for feeling more powerful such as visualisation,
Creating a “smile file” of positive feedback that you have received to pick you up in difficult moments,
Power posing and the research of Amy Cuddy and her colleagues,
Focusing on growing your Circle of Influence not your Circle of Concern,
The importance of picking your battles, upward influence takes time and effort.
Connson is a Professorial Lecturer at the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She joined the LSE in 2008 where she teaches Leadership, Organizational Behaviour, and Negotiation and Decision Making. Connson has over 30 years’ experience as an educator, coach, and consultant working in Europe, Asia Pacific, North America, and Australia. Prior to entering academia, she served as Regional Training and Development Manager for the Boston Consulting Group where she was responsible for the learning and development of consulting staff in 10 offices across Asia Pacific.Connson was awarded the LSE Department of Management’s Outstanding Teaching Contribution Award in 2013, was highly commended for Inspirational Teaching in the LSE Student-Led Teaching Excellence Awards 2015 and 2017, and received the LSE Excellence in Education Award in 2018.Connson holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Organizational Behaviour) from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. in Sociology from Harvard University where she graduated with honours. Her book, Making Your Voice Heard, uses the research on power and influence to help people speak up to those who have more power than they do.
Connson told me: “Expert and referent power are really important … think about it as a reputation that you're building over time and the stronger that reputation when it comes time for you to actually suggest a change to the company or complain about something … then they will go "oh maybe we should listen" … it's a long-term strategy. So the expert power is basically people respect you for something for some kind of expertise, it doesn't have to be an expertise on the particular thing that they're discussing at that moment but it has to be an expertise in something that's important … The referent power is people want to work with you, they want to have this good relationship with you, you have a reputation as someone who's great to work with”.

Interested in learning more about the strategies that helped Deepa Purushothaman become ‘a first’: an Indian American woman and one of the youngest people to make partner in Deloitte's history. She discussed this, her book, “The First, The Few, The Only” and much more on Episode 30 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Her starting out in consulting at Deloitte as the only non-business school graduate in her intake,
The attributes that helped her become one of the youngest partners in Deloitte’s history,
Being comfortable about not knowing everything and asking other people,
Why Deepa transitioned out of her successful consulting career,
Starting her new company nFormation with Rha Goddess,
Why she wrote her book “The First, The Few, The Only”,
Taking power and control back,
Dealing with micro aggressive behaviour,
Navigating your career in a strategic way not just working harder,
How to play the game while you change the game,
Analysing if you should you stay at a company or leave and finding the right destination, and
Don’t fear leaving your job and the associated title and status.
Deepa is the author of The First, The Few, The Only: How Women of Color can Redefine Power in Corporate America and the co-founder of nFormation, a company which provides a brave, safe, and new space for professionals who are women of color.
Prior to this, Deepa spent more than twenty years at Deloitte and was ‘a first’: an Indian American woman and one of the youngest people to make partner in the company’s history.
In her time there, she helped grow Deloitte's Social Impact Practice, served as a National Managing Partner of Inclusion, and served as the Managing Partner of WIN—the firm’s renowned program to recruit, retain, and advance women.
Focusing on women’s leadership and inclusion strategies, Deepa’s mission is to help women of color navigate the complex and often opaque corporate structures of today—helping them not only take a seat at the table, but change the way the table is formed.
Deepa has degrees from Wellesley College, Harvard Kennedy School, and the London School of Economics. She speaks extensively on women and leadership. She has been featured at national conferences and in publications including Bloomberg BusinessWeek, The Huffington Post, and Harvard Business Review.
Deepa and I talked about not putting up with situations that are not beneficial for us and she told me "The advice you're talking about is from one of my mentors, it's my favorite business advice and he said "never need a client more than you want a client" … but I do think it applies to life and I think part of what my work is about is in meeting all these women, now I've met thousands of women of color, I think there's also a lot that we're taught consciously and unconsciously so I think as a children of immigrants a lot of us were taught security is important, to stay in the job, just be quiet, just put up with it, like that setup as an example makes us stay in situations that don't work for us."

Sophia and I talked about starting her tech business and told me "When I was doing my MBA at Chicago Booth, I actually remember I wrote in my application essay that my plan was to come up with an idea for a business, get a team and raise some money during my MBA and then leave business school for this company. I mean I didn't actually expect it to happen, I thought it would be nice if it happened, I didn't expect it to happen but you know what it did happen! I tested the idea, I had to do a lot of ego busting work to raise money but somehow I did it and essentially the team and I, we came up with an idea for a fashion tech company."

Episode 28. Why Kindness Is The Must-Have Superpower For Leaders - Julie Adam
Wednesday Feb 16, 2022
Wednesday Feb 16, 2022
Why is kindness such an important characteristic for leaders? Julie Adam, author of Imperfectly Kind and the Executive Vice President & General Manager at Universal Music Canada, discussed this, her successful career in the music industry and much more on Episode 28 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Her love of baseball and music from childhood;
The creative process and how taking time for yourself outside work helps;
Dealing with nerves;
How her mentors helped her realise that her skills lay in working behind the scenes rather than on air;
Making the most of an unexpected opportunity in an interim role as Program Director which became permanent;
Overcoming limiting beliefs to write her book;
How Julie created a management style of being kind which aligned with her values but was also great for her business;
Being kind does not mean you can’t make tough decisions;
Taking ownership for your career development;
Why it pays to be nice to everyone not just those with power;
Being flexible and dealing with uncertainty; and
Finding a job that you find fulfilling and is true to yourself and your values.
Julie is currently the Executive Vice President & General Manager at Universal Music Canada. Prior to this, she was responsible for driving the strategy and overseeing the management and development of Rogers Sports & Media’s local and national News & Entertainment brands, including the likes of CityNews, 98.1 CHFI, Citytv, KiSS 92.5, Pacific Content, Frequency Podcast Network, FX/FXX, OLN, OMNI Television, and Rogers tv. As President of News & Entertainment, her portfolio included Rogers Sports & Media’s 54 radio stations, 2 podcast networks, 29 local television stations, and 15 television channels.
With decades of experience in radio and broadcasting, Julie is a passionate and dedicated leader in her industry.
She began her career at Rogers in 1999 as the KiSS 92.5 Program Director. Since then, Julie has been recognized as Canada’s first female Vice President of Programming and is a recipient of the Rosalie Award from Radio Trailblazers. Julie is a graduate of Ryerson University and holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree, with a major in Radio and Television.
Julie is proud to sit on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, MusiCounts, Radioplayer Canada, and Canadian Broadcast Sales. At Rogers, Julie was Chair of Rise for Women, a part of the Rogers Women’s Network, and sat on the board of the company’s Inclusion & Diversity Council.
I met Julie through Seth Godin’s writing in community course, which led to her book “Imperfectly Kind: Why Kindness Is The Must-Have Superpower You Need To Lead”, which is an enjoyable read.
Julie and I talked about how you can be kind but firm as a leader and told me "Sometimes, people mistake kindness with weakness and that you can’t be a kind boss because then you’re giving up your power, that’s not it at all. In fact what I’ve learned in business is that often by being kind, you get more as a leader, people want to try harder because you treat them well. That does not mean that you let them do whatever they want or no matter how good or bad people are at their job, they get to stay in it, it’s the opposite."

Episode 27. The Principles Of Influence & Persuasion - Brian Ahearn
Wednesday Feb 02, 2022
Wednesday Feb 02, 2022
Interested in learning more about the principles of influence and the ground breaking work of famed psychologist, Dr Robert Cialdini? Brian Ahearn, author, coach and consultant talked about this, his work and much more on Episode 27 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Applying the self discipline that he picked up from sport to work and aligning that to a goal;
How Brian first formed a connection with Dr Cialdini simply by being helpful;
The seven principles of Influence: liking, reciprocity, social proof, authority, commitment and consistency, scarcity and unity;
Using the liking principle to build relationships;
Creating content and social proof;
Reciprocity in the business environment;
Looking for things to like about people rather than making them like you;
Reciprocity may be used against you;
Applying influence when looking to be promoted at work;
Pre-Suasion, the concept of unity and how it helped Brian get engaged to his wife!, and
His new book, "The Influencer".
Brian is a dynamic international keynote speaker, author, coach and consultant. He specializes in applying the science of influence in everyday situations.
He is one of only a dozen individuals in the world who currently holds the (CMCT) designation and one of just a handful to have earned the Cialdini Pre-suasion Trainer® (CPT) designation.
These specializations in the psychology of persuasion were earned directly from Dr Robert Cialdini, the most cited living social psychologist in the world on the science of ethical influence. I am a huge fan of Dr Cialdini’s work and his book “Influence” is the one that I most often reference on my podcast.
A cum laude graduate of Miami University, Brian has been in the business arena for more than 30 years and training people for over two decades. Brian is also a Competent Toastmaster and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter.
Brian’s first book – was named one of the Top 100 Influence Books of All Time by BookAuthority. His second book, Persuasive Selling for Relationship Driven Insurance Agents, was an Amazon new release bestseller in several categories. His new book is “The Influencer”, which is a fictional account of how an ordinary young man, develops his influencing skills by learning from clients, colleagues and mentors and is partly based on stories from Brian's personal journey.
Brian shared this fascinating insight about Dr Robert Cialdini and his groundbreaking work on influence "Dr Cialdini … had an instinct that if we really want to understand the social influence process we can't confine it to a laboratory ... we've got to get out into the real world. So he took almost a three-year hiatus from teaching and he went out and got jobs … then after that three years he stepped back and he looked at everything that he had learned and he combined it with his understanding of the influence process … and he said you know what there are really six principles, now a seventh, but at the time six universal principles that people all across the globe tend to respond to in one way or another."

Episode 26. Talking Careers - Insights From The First Year Of The Show
Wednesday Jan 19, 2022
Wednesday Jan 19, 2022
“We're not trying to tell people think this way, or think that way. What we're saying is just stop and think, just stop and think … Do you have what you want? Is it working for you? If not, be true to yourself. Reframe, reset what you need to, there is not one definition of success. You may have a definition of success, or a definition of how you should be going about what you want to achieve all these years of your life, then you wake up one day and you say this isn't what I want at all and so you can change it if you want,” Tammy Gooler Loeb shared with me on Episode 26 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Episode 26 is slightly different in format as it marks the 1-year anniversary of the show. Tammy, who hosts the "Work from the Inside Out" podcast, kindly agreed to co-host the show. We discuss and celebrate some of the insights and lessons that have been shared by the guests on Reframe & Reset Your Career. I first met Tammy in late 2020 to chat about podcasting and her encouragement gave me the final push to launch my own podcast and a YouTube channel just a few months later, thanks Tammy!
Tammy is an Executive and Career Coach, Author, Speaker, Facilitator and the founder and host of the “Work from the Inside Out” podcast. Tammy has written a book also titled: Work from the Inside Out: Break Through Nine Common Obstacles and Design a Career that Fulfills You, which will be published on 25th January.
