Want to know more about how your mindset and beliefs can transform many aspects of your life including careers, fitness, managing stress and health? I spoke about this to David Robson, the author of The Expectation Effect, and the winner of the 2022 BPS Book Awards. David is an award-winning science writer specialising in the extremes of the human brain, body and behaviour. His first book, The Intelligence Trap, was published in 2019, and received worldwide media attention.
After graduating with a degree in mathematics from Cambridge University, he worked as a features editor at New Scientist for five years, before moving to BBC Future, where he was a senior journalist for five years. His writing has also appeared in the Guardian, the Atlantic, Aeon, Men’s Health and many more outlets.
David and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
What is the nocebo effect and how it differs from the placebo effect?
Don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking,
Looking at the brain as a prediction machine,
Reframing stressful situations and focusing on the positive aspects,
Changing mindset is important but results can’t be achieved without preparation and effort,
Reminding yourself of the work that you’ve done may help prior to an event like an interview or presentation,
Finding opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone without taking on excessive risk, which helped David with his public speaking,
Celebrating your achievements can help reinforce your mindset, and
Is it possible to increase your willpower?

“Failure and invention go hand in hand and ultimately you need a lot of failures, humanity is evolving by its mistakes and by its survival on those mistakes and that's what creates the resilience. You learn from the mistakes, … ultimately you're getting information from that, it's a feedback loop, you're getting information and more perspective, you're learning by virtue of the trial and error and in a complex world what's important.” Roger Spitz told me on Episode 48 part 2 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

Episode 47. The Science Of Conversation & Strategies To Enhance Communication
Wednesday Jan 18, 2023
Wednesday Jan 18, 2023
"Conversation analysis is the study of real talk, the data is recordings … of real interactions so not simulations, not role plays … we look at real talk in the wild, as it happens ... the aim is to understand the complete encounter from the moment it starts all the way through to the end. Over 50 years of research, conversation analysts have shown that we are pulled around by language by that I don't just mean words, I mean everything that we use as a resource to interact with others so of course our gestures, our gaze, our intonation … So we look at all of those things and ... by what happens in the opening of the encounter and how does that sort of manifest in a trajectory all the way through to the end" Professor Elizabeth Stokoe told me on Episode 47 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Liz joined the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science in January 2023. Previously, she was Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University, where she was Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for REF2021 (Research Excellence Framework) (2019-2021) and Associate Dean Research (2013-2018). She is also visiting Professor II at University of Southeastern Norway (2016-). She conducts conversation analytic research to understand how talk works - from first dates to medical communication and from sales encounters to hostage negotiation.
She has worked as an industry fellow at SaaS companies Typeform and at Deployed. In addition to academic publishing, she is passionate about science communication, and has given talks at TED, New Scientist, Google, Microsoft, and The Royal Institution, and performed at Latitude and Cheltenham Science Festivals. Her book, Talk: The Science of Conversation, was published by Little, Brown (in 2018) and she has a co-authored book on Crisis Talk coming out later in 2022. Her research and biography were featured on BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific.
During the Covid-19 pandemic she has participated in a behavioural science sub-group of the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and is a member of Independent SAGE behaviour group. She is a Wired Innovation Fellow and in 2021 was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the British Psychological Society.
Liz and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Studying psychology at university,
How a lucky break and a supportive supervisor helped her gain a fully funded PhD and set her on the path to specialising in conversation analysis,
How following her instincts and taking action helped her career journey,
What is conversation analysis and why it is important?,
Conversations generally have a structure and follow a path similar to a racetrack,
Busting myths about communication such as the importance of body language and non-verbal communication,
Why asking someone “how are you” at the start of a conversation is not just pointless filler talk,
The significance and meaning of silence in conversation,
Improving communication at work by thinking about the other person and the purpose of the interaction,
Ways to improve interview performance from both the interviewer’s and interviewee’s perspective and
Why it’s not always important to build rapport to have good communication.

“Think about yourself as a business, what's your USP, what's your unique selling proposition and you may not know it now and that's okay because it's something that evolves and you can certainly ask people around you in work or your friends … but if you understand yourself as a little business, it's part of a helpful journey to understand what's unique about yourself and how to put yourself forward because I think we do have to be much more self-aware” Sophie Wade told me on Episode 46 of Reframe & Reset Your Career.

Wednesday Dec 21, 2022
Wednesday Dec 21, 2022
"You don't know what your perfect job is, I don't know what my perfect job is, so go exploring. It's like buying houses you have to look at a lot of houses and then one day you go in one and you go "I love this house and the price is right". It's the same with jobs, really explore as much as possible because then one day you'll have the interview or have a contact with someone and you'll just suddenly be "oh okay this feels like a really good fit for me" " my good friend, Emile West, told me on this bonus episode of Reframe & Reset Your Career.
In this episode, Emilie, who previously appeared on Episode 9, and I talk about an interview that we did on careers for Thrive Global, the link to the article is in the show notes. We discuss creating a conscious and fulfilling career and potential strategies for developing in your current role or looking for new opportunities. At the time of recording, the plan was to release only the video but we thought that it might be helpful to release the audio for podcast listeners, given the current difficulties in the job market.
Emilie is passionate about empowering individuals and businesses to achieve their goals through transformational change and draws on her extensive experience working in investment banking and personal development to achieve this. She was also recently awarded Career Coach of the Year 2022 from SME News Greater London Enterprise Awards. She offers coaching, business consulting and professional speaking services across a range of areas including leadership, brand and image, wellbeing and emotional intelligence. She has 14 years Investment Banking experience most recently heading up the Leadership Development programme for RBS Corporate & Institutional Banking, transforming leadership and wellbeing for 1000+ staff. She was also Head of Personal Development for the RBS Women's network. As a nutritional therapist she specialises in stress management and works with companies to setup educational and engaging wellbeing programmes that will make a tangible difference to individuals health and resilience through practical and easy to make changes. As well as providing mentorship for young professionals, she also supports the charities Action for Children and the HER Centre.
Emilie and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Why it’s important to examine your career path and be strategic,
Does it take a particular mindset to achieve a fulfilling career?
Why adaptability and the ability to become comfortable with change are increasingly more important,
How important is passion when people are looking at which career path to take,
How careers are increasingly non linear and there are many different paths to success,
Strategies for finding a new job and changing career paths,
The role of personal branding and marketing in your career,
Ways to stay on track and monitor your career development and
Overcoming “perfectionism” and sometimes "good enough" is all that you need.
