Episode 45. Neuroscience Insights Into Interoception, Decision Making And Career Success
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
“Internal signals can also influence decision making and I think there is space for both approaches. Sometimes our feelings can not necessarily align with what the right thing is to do and there are definitely situations where we need to make the hard decisions … there's space for that rational thing where you know why you're feeling what you're feeling and choose to override it however I think there's also the reverse scenario where actually paying attention to these bodily signals can also be extra informative” Professor Sarah Garfinkel told me on Episode 45 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Sarah is Professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, where she leads the Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Group.
She completed her PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex, before undergoing a fellowship in Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan.
At the Brighton and Sussex Medical School she underwent further training in autonomic neuroscience before transitioning to UCL in September 2020. Her current work focuses on brain-body interactions underlying emotion and cognition in clinical groups, with a particular focus on the heart.
In 2018, Sarah was selected as one of 11 researchers on the international Nature Rising Stars Index across all STEM disciplines, and in 2021 she was awarded the 'mid-career' award for the British Association for Cognitive Neuroscience.
Sarah and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Why she chose to study psychology at university rather than art,
How she had a lucky break when she was offered a place to study for a PhD,
How dyslexia helps her to think differently and come up with creative and novel solutions,
Interoception and whether it is possible to develop it,
How emotion and gut feelings impact decision making,
Her work on a trading floor study which looking at the connection between trader’s profitability and their interoceptive ability,
Managing stress before a high pressure situation like an interview or a big presentation,
How practicing beforehand and replicating difficult scenarios may help to manage pressurised situations,
Insights into the creative process,
How Sarah uses a collaborative style of leadership and it is possible for leaders to be kind but firm, and
Using power and influence to encourage and support research efforts.

Episode 43. Take Your Shot - Strategies To Enhance Your Career And Business
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
"Goal setting is massively important … that objective setting and the key results of the milestones along the way that you need to achieve. It's helpful, it's not just for business owners or people in jobs it can help you in any aspect of your life ... if you're just blindly turning up to your job every day … that's like jumping into your car and driving randomly for an hour in a certain direction and scratching your head going why wasn't that fulfilling and why don't I like the destination?" Robin Waite told me on Episode 43 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Robin is a business coach, keynote speaker, the Founder of The Fearless Business Accelerator and the best selling author of Online Business Startup and Take Your Shot.
He was entrepreneurial from a young age and used his earnings from a paper round to invest in second hand CDs, which he sold to his school friends. Whilst attending university, Robin spent four years as a systems analyst for a medical devices company, helping them increase their turnover by 50 per cent, from £1 million to £1.5 million.
After graduation, he ran a successful design and advertising agency serving over 250 clients for over 12 years. During this time, he helped over 1,000 business owners improve their marketing, product architecture, pricing, websites and digital advertising.
Then he had a life changing moment whilst riding his bike and decided to close his agency, which led to the start of the work he is doing today.
Robin and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
Building a strong network by first offering to help rather than asking,
Balancing working as a systems analyst, DJing and studying at university all at the same time,
Starting his own branding and design business after university,
Strategies for standing out at work,
How content creation can help build your brand,
Insights into creativity,
Creating a work culture where employees feel they are being listened to and are comfortable challenging the status quo and offering new ideas,
Strategies to help manage fear in uncertain times,
The real life inspiration behind his book “Take Your Shot” and helping business owners reimagine/ transform their process and pricing,
Setting goals and measuring your performance against them, and
The importance of taking action and not procrastinating.

Interested in learning more about becoming a changemaker? Alex Budak shared his insights about this, his book and much more on Episode 42 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Focus on the process and producing good work not the results,
Making change requires strong relationships and teams,
His time at UCLA and cheering on the Bruins,
What is a Changemaker and how do you become one?
Adopting a mindset where you learn from failure and you’re not overcome by it,
How Laila Ohlgren, a telecoms engineer, played a key role in the development of mobile telephony through questioning the status quo and reframing problems,
Having a student mentality where you’re always willing to learn and adapt,
Effective leaders have confidence but also humility to learn from others,
How Alex changed his leadership style to create the right culture in the start up he cofounded,
Microleadership and how there are leadership moments and opportunities every day,
Learning from examples of bad leadership and making a conscious decision to be different,
Good leaders are effective listeners and don’t have preconceptions,
Action is vital for changemaking to be put into effect, and
The concept of “Fire Bullets, Then Cannonballs” developed by Jim Collins, in the context of Steve Jobs and the development of the iPhone.
Alex is a social entrepreneur and a professional faculty member at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where he created and teaches the transformative course, “Becoming a Changemaker.” He recently published a book of the same name, based on the course and his work, which has been well received.
He previously co‐founded StartSomeGood and held leadership positions at Reach for Change and Change.org. He teaches, speaks, consults, and advises organizations around the world, with the mission of helping people from all walks of life become changemakers.
He’s a graduate of Georgetown University and UCLA and received UCLA’s recent graduate of the year award. He loves spending time with his two favorite changemakers: his wife, Rebecca, and their baby son.
Alex told me "What you're raising is so important, it's called the "Failure Paradox" which is when we look at people who we deem successful, we tend to think “wow they've succeeded a lot” and that may be true but what the data show is that they've also failed a lot that often the people who are most successful have more failures than most people and more successes than most people it's simply about in American baseball terms the number of bats you can have. How many times can you give it a shot and then success can come if you can learn to fail forward. to learn from your failures".

"You can actually also reach flow in the workplace and it happens when we have just the right mix of chemicals in our brains and those are dopamine, noradrenaline, acetylcholine. I think that's a mouthful to remember so I called it fun, fear and focus when you have fun at work, your brain releases dopamine, when you have just the right level of fear not too much not too little, your brain releases noradrenaline that gives you like an energy kick and when you're fully focused your brain releases acetylcholine. So when those three come together fun fear and focus you can reach flow", Friederike Fabritius, told me on Episode 41 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Friederike, is a neuroscientist and trailblazer in the field of neuroleadership. Her brain-based leadership programs have transformed how Fortune 500 executives think, innovate, and navigate change. She is a thought leader and keynote speaker, known for engaging global audiences at organizations like Google, Ernst & Young (EY), Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Adecco, Accenture, Deloitte, BMW, Bayer, SAP, Harvard Business Review, trivago, and Audi.
Ever since she can remember, Friederike has been curious about the way the brain works and why people behave the way they do. That’s why she chose to become a neuroscientist.
An alumna of McKinsey & Company and the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, she serves on the prestigious German Academy of Science and Engineering. She is the author of the award-winning book, The Leading Brain: Neuroscience Hacks to Work Smarter, Better, Happier and her new book is The Brain-Friendly Workplace: Why Talented People Quit and How to Get Them to Stay, which will be published on 11th October.
Friederike is fluent in six languages and lives with her husband and five children in Heidelberg, Germany.
Friederike and I had a great conversation and talked about the following:
The dangers of group think.
How Friederike became interested in neuroscience,
The unusual way she became a management consultant,
Her new book and the importance of diversity of thought,
How to get into the flow state through “Fun, Fear and Focus”,
The process for finding creative solutions which involves deep work and having time for yourself,
Learning to say no as you can’t please everyone,
The “ten commandments of great work relationships”, which include setting realistic expectations from the start and fairness within the team,
How introverts can thrive in the workplace,
Changing one’s natural behaviour can waste cognitive resources,

Looking for insights to help you become a better leader? I had the pleasure of discussing this, her book Leading Inclusion and so much more with Dr Gena Cox on Episode 40 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Gena and I talked about the following:
Being taught by Arthur Ashe, the legendary US tennis player, at college,
How her father gave her book on psychology when she was young which inspired her interest in this area,
The huge influence of her grandparents on her life despite not having formal academic credentials,
The events which inspired her to write Leading Inclusion and to eventually leave corporate life,
The distinction between diversity and inclusion and the important role that leaders play,
The components which make an effective leader,
Having a back up plan if things are not working out in your current situation,
Updating your CV regularly as it is easy to forget/ overlook your achievements,
Starting a side project like a podcast or YouTube channel can enhance your career,
How to prepare for and manage difficult conversations at work, and
Creating a culture of safety, where your team are happy to provide feedback.
Gena is an organizational psychologist, executive coach, and author of the new book Leading Inclusion, a groundbreaking guidebook for corporate leaders who want to build inclusive organizations from the top down.
Gena has spent more than 25 years helping leaders in the Fortune 500 and other large global companies build healthy and engaging organizational cultures.
Gena is a straight shooter who brings warmth and generosity of spirit to her partnerships. A noted voice on human-centered leadership, Gena shows executives how to stop using 2019 behavior to address 2022 workplace challenges. Gena was born in England, raised in Barbados, lives in the United States and would like to holiday in Scandinavia!
Gena told me "You have to remember that leadership has two components to it or at least two ... you're helping people to get a job done that's what a leader does, it's not like you're pushing them to get the job done or telling them to get the job done the leader's job is to help people get a job done so there's the task part and then there's the part of the job that is the human part which is to interact with the humans who are getting the job done in such a way that it encourages them to do the work and does not take away any of their natural shine or capability".

Episode 39. Taking Small Steps To Build A Thriving Creative Business
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
"It's also about not only allowing yourself to make mistakes but allowing other people to make mistakes, how do you acknowledge, address them? … Leadership to me is not just about talking, setting new rules, having these heartfelt conversations, … you actually have to build something that actually helps the team and you have to listen to them. If the team says that no we don't need a complicated process, … let's co-create something that people actually use and find it helpful … when that system breaks down a bit, start another conversation again. … so you have to be very iterative, respectful, be a good listener and act accordingly," Fei Wu told me on Episode 39 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Fei helps small business owners craft video content to showcase their products and services, and to grow their customer base with YouTube strategies designed to meet their business needs.
She is a bilingual podcaster (English and Mandarin Chinese), the creator of Feisworld Media (a monetized YouTube channel with 17K subscribers and 50K+ views per month), Feisworld Podcast / 菲的世界播客 (with over 200K downloads worldwide) and Feisworld Documentary Series on Amazon Prime.
She left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld LLC, with a mission to help small businesses and creative entrepreneurs tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams.
She also teaches others how to run better Zoom Meetings and Webinars, own and monetize their content on YouTube via Feisworld Academy.
Her stories have been featured by Dorie Clark in her best-selling book called “Entrepreneurial You”, as well as Harvard Business Review.
Fei was born in Beijing, China and moved to Maine, USA for high school as a teenager and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. Fei has a 3rd-Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and worked as a DJ for the China National Radio Station (CNR) at the age of 16.
I had a great conversation with Fei and we talked about the following:
The importance of the mental game to high performance,
Moving to the US as a teenager, adapting to life in an unfamiliar country and playing on the ice hockey team with and against boys,
How embracing constraints rather than fighting them sparks creativity,
Good feedback helps shape career development and the focus of content creation,
Following her strengths to become a project manager early in her career,
Taking small steps to build her podcast which gave her the confidence to leave corporate life,
Why it's important to enjoy the content creation process rather than solely focusing on the results,
Interviewing Steve Wozniak and Mark Cuban,
Having a vision and goal for your life and career but being open to this changing over time as you grow,
The leadership lessons that she picked up from building her team, especially listening, and
Don’t overthink content creation, just start a blog or record a video, it does not have to be perfect!

“So there's a lot of pressure in change, in trying to engineer how we feel or how we think, thoughts just come into our heads randomly, who knows why we think certain things. We can respond to the thoughts but that's effortful, takes energy. So there's an alternative conceptualization which is that confidence doesn't have to be about how you feel or feeling good or having positive thoughts, confidence is more about an action and the action is driven by your values” Paul Berry told me on Episode 38 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
With a background in the field of performance psychology, Paul works with C-suite leaders, and those transitioning into leadership roles, to enhance various aspects related to organisational and individual performance.
Paul specialises in Developmental Coaching, which seeks to better understand how leaders construct their worldviews, and how this influences their approach to leadership, working relationships and decision-making. His coaching aims to enhance client critical thinking and achieve shifts in perspective.
As an experienced group facilitator, Paul works with several business psychology consultancies in the UK, delivering on large leadership development programmes. He also has an interest in developing coach expertise and has published academic work in this area.
Paul was previously a professional for nearly 15 years in the investment banking industry. He worked as an equity and credit derivatives trader for a global banking group, managing large risk positions.
Paul has numerous coaching and finance qualifications, including a masters in coaching and mentoring practice from Oxford Brookes University, a masters in Performance Psychology from the University of Edinburgh and a masters in Investment Analysis and a BA in Economics both from the University of Stirling.
I had a great conversation with Paul and talked about the following:
His interest in the psychology of performance,
Why Paul started working in Finance,
Managing stress in the financial markets and at work,
The importance of developing your network,
Reflection v Reflexivity,
Confidence and potential strategies for developing it,
Overcoming self doubt,
Managing nerves and being confident in a job interview scenario,
Intuition in decision making, and
“Kind v Wicked” environments in the context of intuition.
