Dr Ruth Gotian, discussed this, career development strategies and much more on Episode 25 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Her love of soccer from an early age and how she became the only girl on her soccer team;
How high achievers’ growth mindset helps them overcome challenges;
Following her passion to move from finance into learning and education;
The P.I.E. concept and how your exposure is significantly more important than your performance to professional success;
How Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan focused on the fundamentals and building strong foundations;

Innovation & Creativity;

As Assistant Dean for Mentoring she oversaw the success of nearly 1,800 faculty members at Weill Cornell Medicine. Ruth received her B.S. and M.S. in Business Management from the University at Stony Brook in New York and certificates in Executive Leadership and Managing for Execution from Cornell University. She earned her doctorate at Teachers College Columbia University where she studied Adult Learning and Leadership and focused her research on optimizing success.
Ruth told me “Everyone thinks, I'm going to do a good job, people will recognise it and I will get promoted or recognised or whatever it is. The problem is that's not how it works! There's been a lot of research on this for over a quarter of a century and the needle has not moved on this … remember the word pie, P.I.E. … P is performance, I is your image and E is your exposure … the amount of your success that's actually based on your performance … is only 10%, that's it, 10%, your image is 30% and your exposure is 60%!”.

Episode 24. Reframing Setbacks To Succeed On And Off The Pitch
Wednesday Dec 01, 2021
Wednesday Dec 01, 2021
"You've got to move forward, you've got to make sure that wherever you are each day, you're somewhere in front of where you were yesterday and if you take that simple approach other stuff works because you're always going to be dealing with something in your life that's not perfect" Jamie Cox shared this insight with me about the importance of managing failure both in cricket and life on Episode 24 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
Jamie was a successful professional cricketer, enjoying an 18-year career in first-class cricket in both England and Australia, representing Somerset and Tasmania. He scored in excess of 18,500 first-class runs, as well as almost 6,000 in List A matches.
After his cricketing career, Jamie moved into sports administration and completed a Law degree with the Open University.
He has subsequently gone on to hold senior roles across a number of organisations including the Australian Institute of Sport, Cricket Australia, the South Australia Cricket Association, St Kilda Football Club and Cricket Tasmania.
Jamie is currently the Assistant Secretary, Cricket and Operations, at the Marylebone Cricket Club ("MCC"), where he looks after all the cricket departments of the MCC, including the delivery of the Out-Match programme, which sees the Club play around 500 fixtures each year, and the important overseas touring schedule. He is also responsible for delivery of the World Cricket committee.
We had a great conversation and talked about the following:
His interest in cricket and sport in general from an early stage;
Learning to manage failure and adversity in cricket;
Not dwelling too long if you’re stuck and taking action;
How the concept of “The Stockdale Paradox” has been helpful;
The importance of focus;
Dealing with pressure and clarity of thought;
How he overcame the loss of his consulting work during COVID;
Be present but set future goals and work towards them;
Taking ownership of your career development;
Looking forward and not dwelling when he encountered adversity;
The skills that he picked up from sport which helped his career after cricket; and
Being polite and treating people well no matter their position.

Episode 23. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs To Reshape Your Future - Deborah Reuben
Wednesday Nov 17, 2021
Wednesday Nov 17, 2021
Limiting beliefs impact many of us but there are strategies that can potentially help manage them. Deb Reuben and I discussed this, becoming comfortable with fear, how her business adapted to life after COVID and much more on Episode 23 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Overcoming limiting beliefs;
The value of building and maintaining strong relationships;
Being more curious to develop your life and career;
Moving outside your comfort zone;
Transitioning from gymnastics to the business world after an injury;
How she developed an interest in technology through the encouragement of her boss;
The lessons and mindset that she learned from gymnastics;
Becoming comfortable with fear, uncertainty and not knowing;
Gaining inspiration and knowledge from people outside her company to develop her career;
Continually evolving through your career;
Networking in the virtual world;
Looking into the future and adapting to not becoming obsolete;
“The Stockdale Paradox”;
Developing TomorrowZone and adapting to life post COVID; and
Potential strategies for job search and career development.
Deborah "Deb" Reuben is the CEO and Founder of TomorrowZone, a technology strategy consultancy inspiring fresh ideas and collaborations to shape the future of business. She encourages new thinking to explore the art of the possible through her extensive technical knowledge, equipment finance experience, and passion for challenging the status quo.
Her view on digital transformation and future readiness is radically different with over two decades of innovating, speaking, and most importantly, real-life innovation experience in finance and software industries. Deborah appreciates and shares with clients and audiences that digital transformation is less about the digital and more about the people.
Deb's clients and audiences include companies like PNC, Wells Fargo, Dell, Mitsubishi UFG, and Caterpillar.
A member of ELFA's Board of Directors, Deb chairs the ELFA's Technology Innovation Working Group, serves on the Monitor Editorial Board and co-founded the Disrupted+ conference series with Monitor.
Monitor Magazine honored her as one of the 50 Most Powerful Women Leaders in Equipment Finance and, in 2021, named TomorrowZone one of the most innovative companies in the equipment finance ecosystem.
Deb spoke with me about becoming comfortable with fear and how this was developed through competing nationally in gymnastics in the US and said "You're building physical muscles but also ... building mental muscles and facing fear, getting used to continually facing fear and discomfort and knowing that as you're going through the learning process when you're trying something new, you're going to suck at it at first and you have to be okay with that if you're ever going to become awesome at anything. The ability to stick with it, the ability to try new things and a little bit of risk taking, I think a lot of that I got from my experience in gymnastics."

Episode 22. Demystifying The Path To Success In Investing & Finance
Wednesday Nov 03, 2021
Wednesday Nov 03, 2021
“I wanted to work for an investment company … one of the regulators had a list of investment companies listed A to Z, so I had a very simple strategy. I started off with the ones starting with an A and wrote them all a letter … none of the initial As replied and I was just about to start on the Bs but I got a letter from a company beginning Ar and they said "we’re interested, come and have a chat with us" and that was purely good luck”. My good friend, Chris Bailey shared with me how he managed to get his big break into the investment industry, which set him on the path to a successful career without the aid of connections or contacts, simply hard work and writing lots of letters!
Chris is the founder of Financial Orbit, a research and investment consulting firm. He has 25 years of investment industry experience at long-only and long-short institutions as a global multi-asset fund manager, strategist/macro thinker and, in the earlier part of his career, as a securities and fund analyst.He strongly believes in the importance of the fusion of top-down and bottom-up analysis taking a view that an understanding of both aspects is the only way to get a full view of global opportunities.Prior to Financial Orbit Limited, Chris worked for a London based fund management group and headed the team for a range of globally directly invested mutual funds, personally running the Growth, Balanced and Conservative funds (collectively around US$2bn of assets) all of which were either first or second quartile against their respective peer groups from inception in 2010 to the end of 2012. In the four years prior to this, for the same fund management company, he managed global thematic equity and European equity funds that also outperformed their benchmarks.He is in the process of writing a book on his journey in the investing world which will be published in 2022.
We had a great conversation and talked about the following:
How he became interested in investing through breakfast TV,
The need for continuous learning in your career;
The role psychology plays in investing;
The danger of group think;
Learning from your mistakes;
Accepting failure and moving on;
How he got his first break into the investment industry;
Developing an enquiring mind and interest in investing to help your job search;
Insights from working for a hedge fund;
Dealing with pressure;
Leaving a successful career to start his own venture; and
Recovering from a serious illness.

That's a lot of moves ahead to hold in in your mind but they play in a game with fixed and predictable rules. Whereas we're operating in a world now where people are acting rationally and irrationally, predictably and unpredictably, so it's impossible that one person can have all the answers or know."
